Garbage miners. In Guatemala City, downstream of the largest garbage dump in the country, we come to a mine, a panorama of plastic mountains mixed with remains of all kinds. And at the bottom of the river, the heaviest: scrap metal, pieces of metal, silver and, often, gold. Going down with shovels to the shoulder by the sidewalks, the miners”, as they call themselves arrive, conscious that it can be their last day. Every minute can be deadly because garbage is a monster that never sleeps. Men, women and children are submerged into toxic water to the waist without any protection and, with a little luck, what they collect in a day they will sell it for €10, enough to bring a plate of food to the family.
